Description
African pepper was used mainly as a pepper substitute in prehistoric and medieval Europe. After the import of black pepper from India during the 16th century, the use of this pepper almost died out in Europe. It is now used mainly in Africa.
The flavor is reminiscent of nutmeg and cubeb, and is aromatic, pungent and slightly bitter. The seeds have little flavor, it is mostly the pods that provide the taste.
