Cultivation and history
The Andaliman pepper is not cultivated on farms. It is a wild plant that bears fruit all year round. In Indonesia, it is said that one should maintain the pepper the way you take care of a child. The more often you "harvest" it, the more often the pepper bears fruit.
But why is this pepper so rare and so special? There has been no attempt made to cultivate them. The pepper planted after it is eaten by birds and then excreted in flying spreads. A wide and non-regular distribution is guaranteed. Only certain enzymes of the bird can fertilize the pepper. No bird, no pepper. All attempts to cultivate these peppers have failed until now. In Sumatra the pepper is traditionally used only for celebrations such as weddings. Due to the fact that it is considered a rare spice it is almost treated with reverence. Anda Liman pepper belongs to the genus of the Szechwan pepper. It isn't spicy but has a surprisingly sweet aroma and a slightly numbing effect on the tongue.
The pepper can be used Asian and European cuisine as well as in salads and fish dishes. In particular, the pepper is used in combination with shrimp for a unique taste experience. It is also delicious when combined with ginger.
