Turmeric, also called yellow ginger, is in the ginger family and is native to southern Asia. Turmeric is an essential ingredient for curries, most importantly because of its yellow color. Its flavor is mild spicy and slightly bitter. Turmeric is very important to Indian Ayurvedic medicine and is known as a "hot" spice because of its cleansing and energizing effects.

Turmeric is also used to flavor eggplant, beans, eggs, fish, meat, poultry, rice, spinach, chilli, and fennel.
